Howdy all,
DungeonCrawler an engine upon which is built a Tolkien-themed dungeon hack game.
It is a very simple game where your objective is to advance in level, gather gear, and slaughter enemies!
To start a new game, you use the N key.
To respawn (start a new character) you use the R key.
YOUR CHARACTER
First, you will be asked to enter a name. Then you will be asked to enter a class, which must be entered as a full word... either Warrior, Mage, or Thief. You will then appear in the world as a variation of your chosen class! Your class CAN change over time... if you spend all day hacking people apart with a sword, even a mage will eventually become a warrior
Characters have a number of stats. Most are self-explanitory.
Strength is strength. It helps modify damage done in combat and your hit points, in addition to some other things.
Lore is magical ability. It modifies spell damage and mana in addition to some other things.
Craft is manual dexterity. It modifies your ability to hit and throw weapons, in addition to some other things.
Power is an over-arching stat that simply represents your power in the Tolkien world. It has an impact on almost everything you do in DungeonCrawler!
Hit points are your ability to stay alive.
Mana is your ability to cast spells.
Fullness is, quite simply, how full you are. The more you eat, the less full you are! Food is used for healing... we will get into that more later.
SKILLS
Skills are generally tied to a class. You pay less to increase skills in your class, and more to increase your skills in other classes.
Pierce, bludgeon, and slash enable you to do more damage using those types of weapons.
Fire, cold, poison, and shock enable you to do more damage using those types of spells and, if appropriate, weapons.
Headhunter increases your chance of hitting an enemy in the head, thus doing more damage.
You BEGIN the game with 3 points to distribute; be sure to use them! You increase skills by clicking on the skill and hitting the + key... once you spend a point, however, you cannot remove it!
INVENTORY
You will see two places where items are listed;
The first is your body parts; namely the head, body, legs, hands, and both hands.
The second, at the bottom, is your inventory.
You can equip gear and get benefits from it. Armor reduces the damage you take, weapons enable you to fight, shields block attacks, and so on.
To equip an item, you use the + key. If the spot it is equipped to is available, it will be equipped. To unequip an item, you use the - key.
Neither spell sources nor thrown weapons need to be equipped to be used. Food, also, does not need to be.
In order to USE an item (for example, food or a magic potion) you use the U key.
MOVEMENT and the MAPS:
Movement is simple; the arrows move you in the appropriate direction!
You begin on The Hub, which is a level from which all other levels are accessible. For the moment there are only three- a Japan themed level (which is very much WIP,) the generic DungeonCrawler level (which is the root game) and the expanded upon and currently active Middle Earth level. You can enter the games by standing on the appropriate icon and hitting SHIFT-A, which is the standard way to activate portals. Once you leave The Hub and travel to Middle Earth, you cannot return to it
Movement from map to map is done through the < sign, > sign, and = sign.
< represents a passageway UP. If you are the top level of a dungeon, it will take you up to the main world map.
> represents a passageway DOWN. It will generally take you into a more dangerous level of the dungeon you are currently in.
= represents a passage.
*In dungeons these passages will usually lead to another dungeon of the same level.
* In world maps these passages will lead to another part of the world... for example, from The Shire to The Gap of Rohan.
There is ANOTHER class of entrances... these are locations, such as small towns, villages, caves, or even the larger places, such as Minas Tirith, Durthang, Dol Amroth, Rivendell, and Bree. These will look like graphics, rather than an entrance, and will be most noticeable in that when you move far away from them they will still be visible in your sight. To enter these places you move onto them and hit SHIFT and A. Careful... some dungeons you can wander into and then have a hard time finding your way back out!
COMBAT
You can fight in combat in three ways.
First, you can throw weapons at enemies as they approach. To throw you hit the T button. It will then highlight a weapon to throw; you just need to press return to accept that weapon and an arrow to show the direction. The game generally chooses the weapon that does the most damage; however, you CAN choose another item to throw.
Second, you can cast spells, either at range or up close. To cast a spell you use the Z button. The cursor will then move to a spell source in your inventory, when you can press return to choose it and an arrow to fire in the direction you wish. You can ALSO cast a spell automatically if the spell source is equipped to a hand and you fight in close combat.
Finally you can fight in close combat with whatever you have in your hands. You do this simply by being beside an enemy and pressing the arrow in their direction. You will NOT automatically attack anyone of the SAME alignment as you; for this, you must hit the A button to attack... you will then engage them in combat.
Note; getting hit in different body parts does different damage. If you are hit in the feet, you won't get as badly hurt. If you get hit in the body (obviously the largest and most obvious target) the damage will be average. Hits in the head can be DANGEROUS, so make sure you get some good head protection!
HEALING
There are two main ways to heal.
First, you can rest by hitting the space bar. One hit gives you a tick of rest. SHIFT + SPACEBAR will allow you to rest until fully healthy, or until someone of the opposite alignment appears in your line of sight.
You can also use food and healing items to heal you, especially in combat. Healing potions are the best, but food is useful too... just be careful, because food will fill you up, and when you are full you can't eat more!
GAMEPLAY
Adventuring through dungeons is the name of the game!
When you enter a dungeon there will be monsters to kill. You may also find large iron doors, behind which you can find fantastic treasure! However, be careful, as treasure is usually guarded, and the guards won't love you bashing open their treasure chests!
You will also come across wandering merchants at times, and even meet some storekeepers in the larger towns (at this time, there are only two of these places, one per alignment...) You can sell the goods you find on your journey to these people. To do this, stand beside one and hit B to barter, followed by an arrow towards the direction of the merchant. You will then open the barter screen. Simply hit the plus sign in their inventory to see what they have! Double clicking on their item tries to buy, double clicking on your own sells your item. A note; in this version, if you click on six of your daggers, you will only get paid for one. To get around this, simply hit the / key, which will split an item off the stack, and sell it. Sorry, we'll fix this for the next version.
So! Go adventuring! If you feel like fighting to save Middle Earth, you can go goblin killing in the Misty Mountains, spider slaying in dangerous Mirkwood, or even wander near the dangerous area of the Gap of Rohan... and, of course, there is always Mordor! Or, if you feel like becoming a Servant of the Eye, you can slay elves in Lorien, dwarves in the Iron Hills, hobbits in the Shire, and men all across the land! But be CAREFUL... jump into dungeons and be prepared to jump out to rest and recover... also, when you have a little cash to spend, wander over to "friendly" dungeons to find travelling salesmen and black marketeers to sell your goods to and, hopefully, purchase a neat new item from.
Some personal tips;
* Some places lower level players can stay and build up experience are the Shire and surrounding areas, any one of the small villages and towns scattered around the maps, and goblin caves and such (you can see what sort of creature to expect in a dungon by checking out the top left of the map screen.)
* You have three main options in combat; a shield and a weapon, 2 weapons, or a big old two handed weapon. Warriors, who have lots of hit points, can often dish out FEROCIOUS damage with a two handed weapon and still make it through combat, but weaker classes like the mage would do well to get behind a shield!
* Don't let anyone approach you without getting pelted first! Spells, thrown weapons... whatever works, soften the up!
* Be careful with those thrown weapons... an enemy can pick them up and use them, and sometimes after a dangerous, smashing combat your thrown weapon won't be in any sort of condition to use again... so save some up, especially if you are a thief!
* Magic rocks. Just be careful, because mana runs out QUICK... the more damage a spell does, the more mana it uses!
* Don't forget to go to "friendly" dungeons; they are good places to wander for food and to find merchants.
* Explore the world! If you know middle earth, you should know what to expect... and there are PLENTY of special folks wandering around, from Frodo and his hobbit friends to Radagast the Brown to Shagrat and Gorbag... most of the characters of the Middle Earth realm are in the game and can be found where they normally would be... but be careful, runnining into an angry Gandalf or a murderous Nazgul can be a bit dangerous for a lower level (or heck, a MID level) character! However, the rewards can be great... nothing says "kick ass" like wielding Glamdring or the Palantir!
Enjoy!
