Hey all, Just wanted to pass on a funny story. One of my fifth grade students today did a report on Drums. In his piece about the history of the drum, he spoke a bit about the use of drums by various militaries, includig the british military... and since I happened to know a website where I could find "The British Grenadiers" song, we took a quick break to listen and to practice our marching in time:) The kids got a kick out of it, and had a great time marching to library:) Of course, when I told them that marching in war would mean hundreds of miles of walking only to arrive at the most horrible place on earth (the battlefield) they didnt like the idea as much... but they DID enjoy the music!

Sounds like math to me... manipulatives (i.e. things you can physically hold) during math are a big focus for many successful math lessons:)
You would have loved... two years ago I did a play about the American Revolution... the kids wrote the entire thing, beginning to end (almost 45 minutes long) and acted and did all of that... and at one point we DID have military drill for the kids who were playing soldiers... they had a good time, and I made it "educational" by having them discuss why things like music while marching was important and what it would be like having to walk everywhere... it was a good time!

I presume 5th Grade is 11 years old? Over here I think they call it year 5 but when I was at school it was the 1st year, anyway my history teacher at that time was real cool. He was/is a scouser (someone from Liverpool) but he had a way of drawing you into to the stories much like Lord Ash is doing with his kids, lol. I particularly remember 'King Arthur' even though it is now perceived as a myth (although some truth is attached to it) the way he told it you believed every word.

Yeah, it is ages 10-11. I am real big on the enthusiasm for all things learning, and I think the kids catch a bit of it, as I am constantly bringing in random stories and broken phones we can disect and satellite images of cool places around the world and such... I dunno, I just hope it sinks in a bit:)
