So, I started making a map, an easy one to start off with, as it's my first. This map is an in game rendition of an actual place. This map requires a large, impassible river, but... water is not shown as a texture or a model... How do I create a river?
Please note: Topic moved here from Medieval Total War board; felt here it would get the attention it needed! [GG]Ashram

Mmm rivers are tricky in MTW/NTW maps... If you make an impassable river there is a great risk that all defenders or all attackers will be caught on the wrong side since the game thinks ALL rivers are there to cross. You need to test just the river before you put in a lot of work in the map. I have made maps with water and not tested them before they were finished after several hours just to find they don't work. You make a river by creating a long depression (rivers should ideally cross from left to right dividing the map in one northern and one southern part to work properly - the bridges can only be placed in north-south irection!) and then you ALT+left click to raise water level and ALT+right click to lower it. Press F1 for help in the map editor. You will get a different help for each mode (i.e. textures, altitude level, models, trees). I hope this helps. [GG]vD

Von, Speaking of water.... I loaded one of your maps (Brandywine, I think it was) into the map editor and saw this little lake you had created. But the water level was constantly going up and down in the lake. What is that about? AK

Well if the water is not a river it is the ocean in MTW's map editing tool mind, and the ocean makes waves. Once you are in game though the water in rivers (dividing the map in a northern and southern part) and lakes(surrounded on all sides by land) will be still. If you however make a shoreline (water on the edge of the map) the water will make waves in game. [GG]vD

Thanks for the help on the rivers mates, found a way aroudn the east to west river (use land as bridges dividing it and making it passable). Now I have a fort in the center, next to the river. 1.) The gates dont open for the defender 2.) The attacker starts inside the fort
is there a way to set where each player deploys or is is just a certain way?

Oh, forts. Fork, I HIGHLY SUGGEST you not even both trying to make forts. First, they look bad for AWI. Second, they are VERY particular. From what I know, ALL WALLS must be connected (I believe with the snap together function?) for the gates to work and for the defenders to start inside the fort. Honestly I dont know exactly how to do it, tho... my Minas Tirith map for METW was a bit of a mess because of this. I would check the boards at www.totalwar.org. Can anyone help? Von? In addition, Fork, please pick an avatar picture ASAP. S!

As soon as you have 4 walls making a rectangle it will be a fort and the map will be considered a castle map by the game, and so the defender/defenders will be deployed inside the fort. But you say the attackers start inside the fort?! That seems really weird! Maybe it's because the fort is on their half of the map? I don't hav a clue... Sadly there is no way of deciding where players deploy - the game does that in it's own peculiar way. About the gates not opening I have no idea - I have never tried making a fort/castle map. Another thing with castle walls is that they fire upon the attackers (no towers needed) which is not usually a wanted effect. I'd say get rid of the fort, or at least make sure there is a small gap in the wall since that seems to prevent the game from considering it a fort, and players will be deployed in the usual way.
