I have yet to play NTW online, as I'm finding it hard to locate a hosting player on in UK timezone, but I also recall reading that I might need some additional maps....
Can anyone steer me towards any additional downlaods I might need?
My install: MTW with VI upgrade, believed up-to-date, NTW mod patched to v503. Music patch added. No other maps or upgrades applied.

Ashram, you're a star, I can't tell you how encourageing all your help has been! Do we unzip the files into the main maps directory, or the VI sub-directory?

No prob man:)
To install maps, you need two files per map: an .inf file and a .jjm file.
You need to put a copy of EACH of these in TWO seperate folders:
in C:Programs\Total War\Savemaps and in C:Programs\Total War\Battles\Maps
OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!
I am sorry I am at work and cannot check that right now, and I cannot remember the exact file names; I'll correct it when I get home today:)
If anyone else can correct it, go ahead.
So you need a new .jjm and .inf in one folder, and a new .jjm and .inf in the other, and the maps should work:)
If you have problems, I'll be on MSN later, I can help you out:)

Really enjoyed those games with you and Flippy! Mind you, I do feel this "don't shoot at the General" rule is daft. Surely if the opposing player selects a "general unit" rather than has a cavalry unit (who is also his general) then that combined general/cav unit should be fair game???
Perhaps I'm missing something here!

The problem is that if you allow shooting at the General unit, the game just becomes a "shoot the general until he is dead" contest and whoever wins that game, wins the whole game. That is maybe the most sacred rule in NTW MP, and violating it even once can result in people very quickly getting angry, so even if you don't love the rule, make sure to follow it if you ever want to find people to play with:) For some info on NTW MP general rules, check the following thread: www.thelordz.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=273The game isn't perfect, and certain rules help it be a better experience:) Thanks for the games, and lets play again soon! Fascinating thread. It appears the notion of mandatory general units is not new. hehe. I agree 100% with thinkdigitial.

I am actually a HUGE believer in making it mandatory that each players general actually be a General unit. However, the majority of players dont agree, as the current general unit is massively expensive. I always say "Well just increase the florins by 1200 or something" but eventually caved in to people who have no interest in making the game look good and in using historically accurate units:)

If the rule were amended to "you may not shoot a dedicated general unit" but "commanding/cavalry (etc)" are fair game, then several things would rapidly happen:
1/ It would become necessary to use general units, or to otherwise conceal the "commander/cav" units well out of shot range.
2/ Everyone, like it or not, would use "dedicated general units" as not to do so would incurr a disadvantage.
3/ "Accidental" killing of enemy generals would likely decrease.
Alternatively, I would suggest that any "commanding/cavalry (etc)" unit that actually moves is fair game.
What's needed (imho) is something to stop "commanding/cavalry (etc)" units moving around the battlefield in a state of inviolable grace, when in reality their parent cavalry unit would be shelled out of it's little pink socks in short order!

I tend to agree. We'll have to wait to see what others think:)

In the new yet to be released MP patch the general unit's cost has been drastically reduced. Now even I can agree to the use the general unit, at least sometimes. [GG]vD

In total agreement with you Ash, there SHOULD be a General unit , thats why hes there. Adds flavour and feel to the game. This is after all a re creation of Napoleonic period not Warcraft.
And I repeat, Generals shouldn't be shelled!!!!!! unless an active threat!
