Hey man, Okay; Young Guard are great at shooting; very fast at reloading and relatively accurate. Middle Guard are good at shooting but good at close combat too; more a close combat unit than the Young Guard. The Old Guard are just beasts at EVERYTHING. As for formations, there arent really preset formations as in Rome... instead, just click and drag and your men take position! Hope that helps, Ash

Beasts!
You Said it LA.
As far as formations are concerned there are still MTW's Roots in NTW and this allows you some pre-set forms to play around with. You can [glow=red,2,300]highlight[/glow] your whole army and then choose a pre-set formation. Yuo can then choose those units that were banded up near each other as you are grouping for better control once you commit troops.
Also, Clicking and dragging for your particular need for a formation can be done in game. You can then use certain key-strokes as a sort of program for these pre-set formations that can then be commanded at anytime.
This takes practice and most GG do not do it I am afraid.
