Inuysha brought up a very interesting question...but since it was about the United States I knew it wasnt gonna be pretty...

theres alot of good arguments and point of views...some are very biased and others are fairly equal

lars573 had the most accurate and unbiased reply in my opinion...and his theory is the most reasonable on all the facts...

for my opinion however...

I would believe US troops should never had been there in the first place...it was a European War...not of any interest to the US and the causes of that war were very idiotic...but the US was sucked in because of the Zimmerman Telegram and the Sinking of innocent cruise liners...the most hurtful one would be the Lusitania...if the US had not entered the war, I believe the war would have gone on longer and there would be a chance of a non-allied non-central powerd victory but a stalemate peace treaty...or there could have been a allied victory and heck maybe even a central powered one...there is no history buff that can say for sure...but what we can all say is...these ideas could have all been possible...its the mystery of history

now I have a strong opinion against lord shands reply...hes a very unbiased guy and one of my most favorite lordz...however his theory is very harsh from an American citizens view and a very ironic one to the European nations...the Treaty of Versaille...was not just a treaty involving the USA..its all with all the countrys involved in that war...and the conditions of that treaty were disgusting...and where all very strong European Demands out of defeated Germany...if America had not joined the war...and WW1 would have become a Allied Victory I say its very possible that aTreaty of Versaille would have still been made...saying that the rise of hitler is the cause from America entering the great war is really stupid...it was Europe that let hitler get into power so easily...the only nation trying to stop his reign was the European Peacekeeper (the UK). It was also the Europeans who voted down the United Nations idea that our US president had offered to keep peace...however Europe did not like the idea...and made there own version called The League of Nations...which the USA was not part of I believe...and the League of Nations was very very weak...especially since the USA was not in it...if you do not believe that the League of Nations was weak...then look at how it tried to stop Hitlers early reign...it did nothing but talk while the german tanks rolled...

to make my point clear from Lord Shands theory is this...

The rise of Hitler was caused from the Hardships done to Germany from WW1 and the Treaty of Versaille...and the lack of follow up of peace keeping aftwards...not because of US entry into that so called "great war" more like "the great blunder of mankinds idiocy"

Anyways just to clear it up, i think you shoudl read the post from me through again.

I never once said that WW2 was to be blamed on the US, for the rise of Hitler.

What i said was that, with the entry of the US into WW1, this gave the Allies, the edge they needed to crush the Germans. Therefore bringing them to the peace negotiaions with basically no bargaining power. This then forced them to accept pretty much whatever terms the allies set out to them. And i never once said that the terms of the Treaty of Versaille were the prerogative of the US, However that doesnt mean the US had nothing to do with it, all the nations involved had input into it, except of course Germany.

And yes your right the rise of Hitler to power was a result of the poor follow up to WW1 and the extremely harsh conditions enforced on them by the treaty. Everyone was to blame here.

My point was, that had the US not gotten involved in the war, at least directly, then its possible that when the time came for peace negotiations, then it was possible that Germany may still have had some sort of force behind them to at least have brokered for a fairer treaty than was handed to them.

read the post again, not once did i blame the US for entering the war, nor did i ever suggest that it was their fault that hitler rose to power! nor did i add anything that suggested the US did anything wrong.

You americans really need to cool down and not go on the defensive every time someone ever so slightly suggests that something you guys did may not have been the right thing, or should have been done another way! But as you will see if you read the post through again i wasnt blaming the US for anything, just pointing out that the entry of teh US into WW1 may have done more harm then good in the long run. but as you say we'll never know! it was just a theory!

Well i'm far from an expert on the subject of the "Great War". I think it's safe to assume that if any side had the resources to win a decisive victory, it was the Allies(even excluding the US' direct military assistance). However such a victory would be elusive and hard fought no doubt.

Anywho i sort of disagree and agree with Flip here. From what i know, which isnt a lot. Woodrow Wilson had introduced a plan, something like the 10 point plan?? which gave the basic guidelines as to how to bring peace without economically and emotionally damaging Germany. But nobody accepted the plan, not even Germany.

Is the Treaty of Versaille the primary reason Hitler came to power? Given that and the communist were the alternative, yes. However its my opinion that it is Germanys fault for not stopping the man or at least limiting his power. The actions of Great Briton and France before ww2 were made out of self interest(avoiding conflict). It was the responsibility of Germanys government to to take action against Hitler who was clearly aggressive in the early years of his coming to power.

But thats just my opinion, which is probably nonsense. But i like to see a light hearted discussion.

I wasn't making fun of flippy because he posted this thread but because he very often tells people to "read and comprehend!" when they tend to disagree with what he says or has trouble understanding his sometimes lengthy confusing language, and now he had apparently misunderstood Lord Shand's post. Hence the "read and comprehend" remark from me.
