Free speech ?
In my late teens I heard a song lyric/poem type thing that I always thought was very true. Cant remember the exact words but it went something along these lines.
"at the christening the baby started crying. I felt both happiness and sadness at this. Happiness because I had forgotten what real free speech sounds like. Sadness because this was it's last bastion."

If someone poured a drink over my girlfriends head, I sure as hell wouldnt start firebombing and killing people over it. I might be angry, I might call the authorities, I might verbally confront them... but I wouldnt go killing a bunch of people who have nothing to do with it. Heck, at this point people are protesting at various non-Danish embassies, just because other countries ran news stories that included the pictures! What, if the person who poured a drink over my girlfriends head was wearing a green shirt, I would go beat up the next person wearing a green shirt I saw? No, that is dumb.
Say what you want, but the reaction is stupid. I know a hell of a lot more about Islam than just about anyone else around here, and I can tell you that there is nothing in the Quran that says you should do this. In fact, much of this is being used as a political machine. The ban on pictures is a ban on all prophets of Allah. However, no one really gets excited at all the pictures of Jesus Christ that exist in the world, and Jesus is the second most important Prophet (or third) in the Islamic faith! So it isnt the breaking of religious tradition that is upsetting people; it is the insulting tone in which it is done. So they arent protesting and firebombing over a religious insult really; it is all over a "regular" insult.
Basically it boils down to whether or not you think being insulted condones murder. If you think so, then fine. If not, okay. Personally, I am in the "not" catagory. I think a lot of this has been blown out of proportion by a handful of governments that will turn to ANYTHING to mobilize their population to action against "the West."

don't suppose it occured to anyone that Islam is the most importent thing in these peoples lives, the adore their religion, so when it is insulted they become extremely upset. I someone defaced your girlfriend/wife by pouring a drink over her in a bar, what you gonna do? Lack of understanding and respect is whats happening right enough. I wouldn't expect anything less than violence for the insult. As Dabrowski says if "if someone hurts your citizens" then your allowed to retaliate, hence the reason Syria and Jourden let the mob do what it likes to the embassies. I'm afraid i wouldn't like to see Europe act the way Dabrowski suggest, for one we'd be at war with America within a week, and frankly most of Europe is sick of war. You can't compaire a political cartoon to abusing your girlfriend or hurting the citizens of a country: you're comparing apples with oranges. Poking fun at a religion in a newspaper does not warrant the burning of a country's flag, the destruction of buildings, and the killing innocents. I'm sorry, it just doesn't. These kinds of things can be protested in a peaceful, civilized way, and until these Muslims realize this the world is not going to take their plight seriously. And do you disagree that Christianity is the most important thing in the lives of faithful Christians? The media is constantly making fun of Christianity and its followers, but do you see Christians in the streets burning Western flags and blowing up buildings? No, of course not.

No American's are burning UAE flags or burning down Mosques over the fiasco dealing with the UAE Government-owned company trying to buy off our ports. ( Dubai Company, or something along those lines. )
If we can act peacefully when our President blatantly lies to us and accepts the opinion of a foreign company over Congress, ( Yes, I'm going to write about it soon. ), then they can live if a newspaper insults Mohammed.
