Well, it depends, are you still playing Single Player? In Single Player I can only say they're useless, as the AI doesn't comprehend ambushes too well, nor does it comprehend safety to it's General when charging or doing whatever it does. Scout's work minaly within the MP experience. Scouts are NOT meant as combat troops. Scouts are meant to do this: Scout. Thus that's what their name implies. You send them out, to hunt out enemy units that might be out there hiding in ambush. This way, you do not have to spend the money on a Light Dragoon/Light Horse unit simply to use it as a scouting device. Also, five scouts are not so much a loss if they are fired upon/attacked by the enemy infantry or cavalry. Second of all, they are GREAT at hunting down General's or Artillery. In a 3v3 game, with two artillery maximum, I've been able to hunt down Artillery, and destroy it repeatedly with Scout's, as many players do not watch Scout's, or simply do not care if they're near them. I mean, what's the threat of five horses, right? Last, they CAN be used in a last ditch situation. Enemy light infantry pounding your own line as they move forward? You can use a unit of Scout's to get in behind the light infantry, and hit them long enough to delay their reloading, thus giving you more time with less casualties. Also, when you engage the front of an enemy unit with infantry in melee, five Scouts can do a deal of morale damage to the rear of a unit, making the enemy unit more likely to rout from battle. But, it looks like you need to get some Multiplayer under your belt to see Scout's/Natives at their best. Scottish76thOfFoot@Hotmail.com Add me, and we can get a game on sometime.

you are correct ive never played TW on MP, so maybe you are rigth, i can only see them employed on long battles, as the battles y play whit the AI are only about 15-20mins. and the fact that the Ai doest lay ambushes or even hides for that matter.
Id be honored to play you in MP but im afraid that im not all that good as my battle expierince whit the TW has been limited to singleplayer, i am currently trying to figure out how to get the MP to work, i have added you and hope you will accept my humble invitation to join my contact list. And maybe sometime in the neer future we will meet in the field of battle and glory.

Excellent, hope to have a few games soon! I also enjoy the scouts... if you dont have enough money for 16 units and want to have a few of your units strong, sometimes you have a space left and you can pick up some scouts... as mentioned, they are great at picking up ambushes and at hunting artillery, and the enemy often wont waste time fighting them!
Look forward to games,
Ash

If u have money left over and cant find a constructive way to upgrade larger numbers of troops I would not hesitate to use scouts for mobility; a squad of 4 scout units arrayed in a doubled lined group has some awesome skirmish possibilities. The only big advantage of native units over scouts is that the injuns can hide quickly. Using a few scouts gives you much higher valor on the rest of your forces.

Right; you can bump their valour up quickly, and it saves money for other units. Plus, as Dab said, scouts are GREAT for attacking enemy artillery or generals, and are VERY fast. I love using them!
