A host of problems!

I am a bit of a computing noob, despite playing online games since '92 (who remembers Air-warrior?).

I have: Zonealarm, which acts as firewall, and no earthly clue about the best way to configure the computer in order to be able to host NTW games. I'd also appreciate guidance on how unsafe the changes would be in opening up ports (which I havn't the first clue how to do) in order to host. ie what risks I'd be running.

My box, for business reasons, needs to kept pretty secure, so it may well be I simply have to accept I can't host....

I'd be most greatful for assitance as then I can make the rules up, as hoster, and maybe I'll be able to kick Ashrams arse for a change! muhahahaheheheh.

I wish it was a simple matter of configuring your Firewall alas it is not, if you are using a router you won't be able to Host. I got round the problem by switching my connection to a ASDL modem rather than a router.

I'll be on around 7pm gmt this evening if you fancy a game on line.

I use an ADSL modem, so in that regard I should be ok.

Software firewall like ZoneAlarm (I have Norton firewall up and can host) usually do not pose a problem, but as Salis says hardware firewalls like in routers etc. do prevent you from hosting.

I'd check to see if its a router/modem, its these that cause the problem. They tend to act like a hardware firewall.

Same problem here, behind my pc's firewall, then behind a router which goes to another PC and that also has a firewall, so i can't host.

Air Warrior! I spent countless hours (and dollars...back then it was pricey) playing AW and later Warbirds and Aces High.

I can't host because of the router, but I think I will be able to if I just plug the DSL modem straight into the computer...I'll have to test that. However, security is an issue for me, too, so not sure I'm willing to do it.
