Since we have been having some problems with out of sync games (ghost games) I searched the Activision Customer Support Database for info and found a few things. Especially the shortcut command line option for those who host (though if it was a host problem it's weird that the same player and only he is affected all the time. May be a combination of factors...)
- DirectX version should be the latest (9.0c by now - available from www.microsoft.com - search for directx)
- Question
I am having major out of synch problems with the multiplayer game.
Answer
A command line option called -strictserver is required for all shortcuts in order to play multiplayer properly. This is included in the shortcuts by default, as well as the splash screen “Play” button. Users who edit their shortcuts, create a new one from the EXE, launch from the EXE, or Launch from GameSpy Arcade will not get this command. This command basically makes Viking work like MTW for sync issues. Without this command, you will find your games diverge with wildly different results (50% of the time on Castle maps, two opposing sides will both be told they have won, the rest of the time kill tallies will differ). You will also encounter increased likelihood of freezes. The command line only really matters for the host. If the Host has this command line in place, the multiplayer game will function as intended, regardless of what the clients are using.
Your “Start in” (I think this should be "Target"(direct translation from Swedish version) - the one above "Start in", the one with the .exe in the path) field should look something like this:
“C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval – Total War\Medieval_TW.exe” -strictserver
The host of the game must have this command line in order for it to take effect. Be sure to connect using the in-game Multiplayer menu.
- Make sure you and all other players meet the multiplayer minimum system requirements (Pentium® III 750 or Athlon® processor or higher required for Multiplayer Mode).Check to see if you are playing through a firewall, proxy server or proprietary ISP computer network systems. Activision does not support playing the game through a firewall or proxy server.
- Question
I am experiencing a sync issue upon joining a Multiplayer game or a message accused a player of cheating when he was not.
Answer
Switching from Single Player to Multiplayer can cause sync issues and false cheat warnings. Restart the game and go directly to Multiplayer to fix this problem.
And a little something if your firewall is acting up:
- Question
What ports are needed to play via GameSpy?
Answer
If you are behind a firewall/proxy and are able to change its settings, GameSpy Arcade needs the following TCP ports open in order to function:
6667 (IRC)
3783 (Voice Chat Port)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
6515 (Dplay UDP)
6500 (Query Port)

Let's all start by checking our shortcuts (those of us who host) and DirectX versions, and maybe this will help.
