As this subject came up in a different thread I thought it would be interesting to get a list together of regiments nick names. I am assuming "nick-name" is understood worldwide ? but if not, it is an alternative name for someone/something. Usually shorter but not always and quite ofter it stems for a joke, or a comment of respect etc"
Um, think I will leave word explanations to the dictionary
Anyways, this list is for the Brit army and is direct off Wikipedia. There are a few which are later than our period (Desert Rats, 7th Armoured) but most are old names for regiments that were around in the 19th century.
"Die Hard's" is one of my favoutrites and this is a later name from near the end of the 19th century. They were actually given an order from their commander to "Die Hard" as they were surrounded with no hope of survival.
A lot of names come from uniform colours(buffs, grasshoppers, yeller beliies). Also the regiment number made up some names like fighting 9th etc
