Hello! I am PPO (ubermonkey7) and I was wondering how to make a good NTW army. Just like what type of units I should use. How much cavalry (and how to use it) etc, etc.
The help would be much useful!
Cheers, Erik

Good question, and one thats often hotly debated.
It depends on the style of play you play. I like low cost Armies around 10000, adds realism I find, and I like a General, also Arty do you use the Battery rule? Do you restrict Guard and Elite units? All this will have a bearing on your choice of Army. But I think a good balance for a 'Realistic Army' would be something like
Gen 2 Guard Inf Units 1 Elite Inf Unit 2 Light Inf 5 Line Inf 1 Cann 1 8pdr 1 Hussar 2 Heavy
This to me is a better representation, but depends if you are after realism or Uber troops. The balance is swaying to more realism I'm finding and this can only benefit the game. Generals will become more wary and tactics will be more prominent !

Welcome to the forum PPO! The problem is that if you buy more than 4 of one kind the following units become more and more expensive (sadly hard coded in the MTW engine). So 5-6 line inf armies gets much more expensive for some factions who only have one type of line. I think Salis' setup is a good one. In most games however where there are no restrictions I usually get (since I like to win ): 4-5 line (depending if I have arty and if a second line inf is available) 4 grenadiers (usually better in melee than guards) 2-3 rifle infantry (depending if I have arty) 2 heavy cav 12 pdr and or cannister (depending on situation, artillery rules etc.) 1 medium cav for my general (i am no great fan of the general unit) You need all the elite troops you can get when you face the French "all guard army" (4 young, 4 middle and 4 old guard) which appear at times. ;D [GG]vD

The usual British army tends to consist of 4 British Guard, 4 Highlanders, 4 KGL Lights, and then assorted cav and arty. Unfortunately, this is SO common that it has become somewhat cheesy. Anyway, just my two cents. I'm not helping you again until I manage to actually pull off a win against you Ash

Grenadiers have more morale than Line infantry...they have more range...and higher Charge Bonus and Melee Bonus.. Cheers

Hi PPO and Welcome!
You have gotten some good examples here and bear in mind that we talk about this type of thing all of the time here.
We are pretty concerned with making quality suggestions to The Lordz on just what they should do to increase thr fairness and thus Fun to be jad in MP for this version and Version NTW II.
So, there will be many discussions here on balance and army composition. Stay tuned!
Also, please choose an Avatar for your Character here.
It's fun, it's easy!
Buxford link=board=Napoleonic&thread=1104904766&start=8#0 date=1105066713]So, which is better: guard infantry or grenadiers?
In most cases Guards fire quicker and have slightly higher honour/morale while grenadiers have higher close combat stats. So for fire fights choose guards and for melee choose grenadiers. I disargee von it really all depends on what guards it is... if its the young guard..then yes...but there more like grenadiers to me...just with the name of GUARD... ;D Grenadiers have more range of 4050 most guards have less except the French Guard units... What the Guards have over Grenaiders is morale...you can expect a GUard unit to hold its own longer than a Grenadier unit... but like I said it all depends on the faction... but my adivice... Grens for shooting and hand to hand....basicly your assualt force GUards for your ultimate reserve to put in a rough place..because you can rely on them for a tough situation on the field CHeers

I was not talking about range flippy I was talking about reload time in which the top 5 are in no particular order: Prussian Guard Foot Guard Russian Guard Young Guard British Guards
That is why I would choose guards for a fire fight. Sure most grenadiers (if not all and also French Old and Middle guard) have range 4050 instead of the ususal 4000, but I think the faster firing rate is more important.
